Okay, maybe about 1% of you have eaten REAL mayonnaise. But the rest of you have been living a lie, eating fake mayo, and getting ripped off.

Let me explain…

Mayonnaise is originally a Spanish sauce, although the French seem to argue this fact. In general, mayo is a stable emulsion of olive oil, eggs, lemon juice, and salt. All modern mayonnaise recipes are a variation of this original Spanish sauce. So, the original mayonnaise was made with OLIVE OIL. Granted, most people would find this original recipe a bit too “intense” if made exclusively with the EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil), so a blend of oils is usually a better option for achieving the right taste.


Take a look at a great, simple, 4 ingredient recipe for making real mayonnaise at home.  Fresh, delicious, and made at home with wholesome, easily identifiable ingredients is the optimal choice.

However, not everyone has the time or the patience to add this task to their day.  So, we turn to the supermarket for convenience.  And this is where the big problem occurs.

Nearly every single mayonnaise at the local supermarket is made with some amount of soybean oil.

supermarket aisleEven the ones that say they are made with Olive Oil or Canola – they still contain soybean oil as the primary oil.  It’s very deceitful, and it is the responsibility of the consumer to vote against this practice by spending your money on better products.  Obviously, soybean oil is much less expensive than EVOO, and that’s why mayo is mass produced with soybean oil instead of EVOO.  The downside is… SOYBEAN OIL IS TERRIBLE FOR YOU. There are 3 basic problems with soybean oil (and soy, in general): trypsin inhibitors, phytic acid and worst of all: phytoestrogens. I will expand on this information in a separate post.  Additionally, I am aware of the latest research that attempts to validate soy consumption as possibly beneficial in regards to helping prevent specific types of cancer.  I say that research is bogus, but, certainly, decide for yourself.

There is also another huge issue, in addition to these three basic problems, with soybean oils.

Most of the vegetable and seed oils in mass produced food items is RANCID.  Which means they are partially or completely oxidized.  Peroxidation (a specific type of oxidation that occurs with lipids) is one of the 4 causal factors in HEART DISEASE.  And oxidized poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), the main fatty acids in vegetable and seed oils, has also been linked to cancer and Type II Diabetes (study, study, study, study).

For now, just make a mental note – DO NOT INCLUDE soybean oil in your diet in any amount. It is 100% an error to eat soybean oil.

So, what can you do about that?  If you love mayonnaise (like I do!), how can you avoid poisoning yourself and your family with soybean oil?

Luckily, you do have a few options to enjoy real mayonnaise, besides making your own from scratch.

Stonewall Kitchen makes a great Farmhouse Mayo using only Canola Oil, Salted Eggs (whole eggs, salt), White Vinegar, Mustard Powder, Natural Flavor and Tocopherols (natural antioxidant). A great product and available at several specialty grocers.  Although I am skeptical of Canola Oil, it is a much better choice than Soybean Oil.

Another great mayonnaise is made by Chosen Foods – Chosen Foods Avocado Oil Mayo, 24 Ounce, made with Avocado Oil… check out the list of ingredients – excellent. This one is my new favorite – Love the taste!

spreading mayoUPDATE 2018: I had an unpleasant experience recently with the vendor who supplied the Chosen Foods Avocado Oil Mayo through Amazon. Consequently, I switched to Primal Kitchen – Avocado Oil Mayo, Gluten and Dairy Free, Whole30 and Paleo Approved (12 oz). This one is slightly more expensive, but I feel that the quality is a bit better, and the vendor is more reputable.  And, BONUS, they have started carrying this item at the Hannaford Supermarket near me.

All three of these mayonnaises are provided in GLASS jars, which is extremely important to me. I avoid food sold in plastic containers like the plague, but that’s a subject for a whole other article.
